Nonesuch #286

It looks like I am back in the world of iPods. As you all may recall, my iPod stopped working about a year ago. Would not update music, kept asking to update my software, adding one song then asking to start over. I had a good many songs I have got from iTunes and my own cds and other places. I wasnt sure what to do. But, yesterday I purchased an iPod shuffle a 1GB player that holds depending on the size of the songs up to 250 songs. Plus if I set it to random or shuffle, cannot remember which one, when I connect to the computer I will get a random selection of 250 songs for a different set each time. I am in the process of transferring my songs from one computer to the one I built last Fall. So far only 65 songs out of a few thousand but I am using a 1GB thumb drive so can only bring across so many. I am just glad that the songs are transferring.

I did some cleaning this morning and now time to relax.

I know of 2 people getting married today. One I used to babysit many years ago. The other is the cousin of Sally. It will be a nice day for a wedding. I know one of them is outside, only slight chance a shower in the afternoon. Seems we are already in the summer storm mode.

Preparing for my trip to Chicago in a month for a work conference. I have been before but it is being held in a new hotel just 5 min from a Medieval Times resturant which I have wanted go to for years. And I may go see the Cubs play at Fenway even though I am not a baseball fan but come on, chance to see the Cubs at Fenway? And I will stop by the hot dog place I love and now I cannot remember its name and cannot find it searching on'line, if I find it I will add it later. I heard about it on the PBS "show the hot dog program". I just found it, Demon Dogs and it has been shut down. No wonder I couldnt find its website. I guess if anyone has any suggestions for hot dogs or anything else in the Chicago area, let me know.

Nonesuch #284 Strange dream

<>

Last night I dreamed that Wil Wheaton, Eric Stoltz and myself had formed a band. We were meeting at the house I lived in in Durham when I was growing up. We were discussing details
and how we had never been able to meet in person and Eric said that him and Wil had no excuse to see each other cause they lived down the road from each other and Wil said good point. We hadnt even announced any tour dates or album release and the media/internets had said we would be a sensation since we all had musical background and Eric spoke up and said, remember I don't and we all laughed. So, we had a function at a school in Australia and we had to sneak my friend Sally and her dog Iki in the truck and then on the plane and hide them in an attic room but Iki got out while Sally was sleeping so Eric, Wil and I chased him around the house we were in and he kept getting away and then we found him reading in some side room/den next to a knocked over Elvis lamp.

On Wednesday I went to check on my prescription at the pharmacy. I get there and they have no record that I had turned in a new prescription written by my doctor last month when I picked up my last refill on the previous prescription. Turns out, they had lost it. So, they said they would fax/call my doctor and see if he would reply. Now, I have been going to the same pharmacy for almost 10 years for this medicine and the tone I was getting from them is that I was trying to pull something over on them. So, I leave the pharmacy and call my doctor. I explained what happened as best as I knew and they said they would take care of it. I go yesterday and it had been faxed but no reply. I asked them should I call today and they said yes. So, around 10 or so. I called. Still no word so I told them I would hold on the line till they had heard from the doctor that I could get my prescription filled. 45 minutes later, they have contact and I will be picking up my prescription this afternoon. So annoying. I am really thinking of changing pharmacies and even doctors.

After going to through all that on Wednesday I went to the grocery to pick up a few items. I got an urge and picked up a Zero bar and a bottle Yoohoo. It was so good and brought back memories of sitting around the table at my friend K-dawwg's house while his Mother tried to find something for all of us to eat. She would ask if we wanted a sandwich or lasagna. She could make it right now. Good memories, I tell ya. Good times.

No plans whatsoever for the weekend. Well, Spring Cleaning leftover from last year will be attempted. Not exciting but I guess it is plans. Maybe have a guinness to relax with in the evening while watching COPS and then some British comedy if PBS is still not doing its fundraiser for the Spring. I am missing "Keeping Up Appearances" and "Are You Being Served?" even though I have seen all of the episodes 2 or 3 times in some cases.

Your Ex Is Paranoid

Whether your ex was accusing you of cheating or your friends of being evil...

Your ex definitely saw things that weren't there!

People with paranoid personality disorder bear grudges, are always suspicious, and confide in no one.

Sound at all familiar?

Hit the nail right on the head.

Drove up to hillside manor sometime after two a.m.
And talked a little while about the year
I guess the winter makes you laugh a little slower,
Makes you talk a little lower about the things you could not show her - Counting Crows

These lyrics been going through my head for the past couple of days. Not really sure why. That and various ABBA songs which makes abbasolutley no sense whatsoever. Worked yesterday, long day. It was in the 80s and the AC was not on in the building. In fact I think the heat was on(its on the street). I had two fans on me, windows open and using cold drinks to keep me cool. It didnt work. Didnt really cool down till I got home. Was so exhausted but then couldnt sleep. Was up around 3 or so but dozed on and off till I had to get ready to go into work.

Not much else has been going on. Like I said in the now famous "Blah Post" I live a boring life. Sometimes exciting things happen but they are very few and far between. Most of the time they are not anything that really needs to be told. Like the hot dog I had yesterday was very good, extra mustard does the trick. Or I made 26th level with my hobbit hunter on lord of the rings online. Does anyone, including me, really care about that?

I commented on a lot of blogs over the weekend, I usually just lurk, never saying anything but something stirred me to reply/comment/delurk. I was trying to be witty, make jokes when appropriate but they now seem all flat when I read what I wrote 24 or 36 hours ago.

I really want a dog. Many friends both in blogland and in real life have new puppies or have adopted rescues. I am thinking of getting a greyhound rescue but where I live does not allow dogs. I have had cats which were fantastic but is just something about a dog. My friend Sally has a great dog, a shepherd lab mix. We hang out when I go visit her, the dog and I that is. He thinks he is a lapdog but I think most labs think that so not really a surprise there.

I really really need a vacation, still want to go to the beach. Still have not gone, been saying that for a few years now. One day, one day.

Nonesuch #281 Happy New Year Middle Earth

Taken from one of the listserves I am on:

Today is celebrated as New Year's Day in the Kingdom of Gondor, for it is the anniversary of Sauron's fall. Despite his power as a wizard, Gandalf needed to perform archival research to confirm his suspicions about the true nature of the Ring, thus setting in motion the events that led to the end of the Third Age. Tolkien's personal and academic papers, as well as most of his literary manuscripts, are at Oxford University's Bodleian Library, but Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has an extensive J.R.R. Tolkien collection that includes the original manuscripts and multiple working drafts for The Hobbit (1937), Farmer Giles of Ham (1949), and The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955).

And that's it. Wow, not much to go on there. Anyway. And now for something complete different:

Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say it's all right

Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right

Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...

Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been clear
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say it's all right

Nonesuch # 279 Deep fried goodness

Yum yum. This may be my next experiment. I doubt I could eat even one of these but I bet it would be very good.
As seen at slog:

BACON, CHEESE AND BEER DOG

Ingredients:
1 hot dog
1 slice of thick-cut bacon
1 can of spray cheese
1 can beer (It doesn't matter what kind, but we recommend something dark. Corona probably isn't a good idea)
1 cup flour
Oil for frying

Instructions:
This one is a little work-intensive, so be ready to buckle down. First take the center out of the hot dog with an apple corer, if you have access to one. If not, just cut out the middle with a knife. Fill the cavity with the spray cheese and use the hot dog you removed from the middle as a cap to keep the cheese in. Wrap the bacon around the hot dog and deep-fry for two to four minutes or until bacon is cooked. Dab them dry with a paper towel (so the batter will stick). Mix the beer with the flour until it reaches a thick, but lump-free consistency. Dip the dogs in the batter, coating the dog completely, and deep-fry on high heat for two to three minutes or until brown and deadly.
NOTE: Don't fry them too long or all of the cheese will explode out into the oil. That's very bad.

Sunday I decided to go to Sonic for my weekly treat to myself. I usually get two meals so I can savor the food over time. I got the extra long coney with fries, a root beer, a chili cheese wrap with fritos and two hot fudge sundaes. I came home and as I was coming up the steps I dropped one of the sundaes. After picking it up and getting all the food inside, I went to lock the door and my key breaks off in the lock. Fortunately I had an extra lock set, so I removed the old set, and tried to install the newer one. It worked but it was flush and only locked really well from the inside. But it did lock on the outside, just not as good as I would have liked it. Yesterday after lunch I went to ACE hardware and picked up a new set and talked to the guys there. They gave me advice on how to work the lock set with an old door. My door is 50+ years old. Sometimes the older doors need more attention that the newer more cookie-cutter doors. The new ACE lockset fits perfect. It locks smoothly on the outside and inside. This new one has a switch on the inside instead of just a key, makes it easier and safer for me. I can tell I will need a new door sometime in the future but for now I am good to go.
And by the way, the chili cheese wrap rocked and I was able to save most of the hot fudge sundae I dropped to enjoy it the next day.
Not much else going on. Went to WalMart thus morning. Tuesday mornings are good to go there. Not many folks except the restockers. WalMart is like Tesco. And for those that don't know, Tesco will be opening a few stores in the States this year. And speaking of Tesco, I am planning a trip to England to see a close friend and his wife. They are at the University of Warwick doing grad school. I am waiting on my passport before getting tickets and setting dates but I hope it will be early summer.

Cliff Clavin joins the cast of Dancing with the Stars

I just do not know what to say about this. I will just leave it be.

Why can't we the people that are supposed to watch it have a say in who participates? Who do you all think should be on next season's Dancing With the Stars? Let me know in the comments and I will post your answers.

In other tv news: Those cavemen from the geico commercials will be getting their own ABC sitcom. I like those commercials, some of the best I have seen in awhile but is there enough material there for a sitcom?

Nonesuch #273 Absolutely nothing, say it again

Absolutely nothing has been going on, well except for work, playing lotro(lord of the rings online) and sleeping and eating. I wish I had some exciting news but I don't. I was sick most of this week been out of work since Monday but feeling better. It was that nasty cold thingy that has been going around where I work. I am the 3rd person in my building to have it. It just threw me for a loop, Tuesday is a blur, I thought yesterday was all day was Tuesday. Daytime TV just gets worse but that may have just been the fever and the meds affecting me.

I did try new Gatorade Rain Cherry flavor this morning. It is good. I may get another as soon as my taste comes back to me and see if I still like it.

A co-worker suggested I get cable with my wacky sleep patterns. If I got cable, I would never sleep. I am sure if I flipped enough I could find COPS on 24 hrs a day. I wouldnt know what to do then. COPS used to lull me to sleep now I recognize the episode, like a favorite song you know all the words to. I go, oh yeah, this is the one where the cop know the crack whore but she denies that she is either smoking or whoring but she ends up being arrested cause she drops her crackpipe breaking her probation.

And now for these important messages:
All work and no play makes Jonny a dull boy.

Sometimes I think I want to write about my past relationships other than with CW but I dont really think it would really be worth it. I think it would not do me any good. But another side of me wants to look back and know my mistakes so I can be aware for the future, but what future. I guess since I do not see any relationship happening shy should I want to improve for the future. VB wrote a comment on here sometime back:

"don't worry about trying to impress anyone. when you like a girl, it shows. if you make her feel like the only woman in the room, you're doing a good job'.

She is right, now just need to get out there to have some more opportunities. I would have a party at my house but, well, it is a big mess, worse than it has been in a very long time, since I moved into this one. Oh well. I just have a lot of clutter. Maybe I will take pictures or video to show, or maybe not. It is somewhat embarrassing.

Weekend is almost here. Mine will be pretty much the same as I have done this week anyway, rest, play on the computer, eat and rest some more. Probably be some basketball on tv this weekend. Duke and Carolina play on Sunday. So I will try to watch that if it is on regular tv which it was last year so I guess it will be. Last year, the game was on all 6 or so channels of espan, the pre-game was getting almost as long as the superbowl. Is this game really that big? It is as long as the media says it is.
